Popeye - The 28.5 Million Dollar Man!

That was the sale price against the estimate of about $25 million for Jeff Koons’s stainless steel sculpture, “Popeye.” Beautifully finished in colorful, jewel-like glazes, the statue was part of a $364.4 million sale of contemporary art at Sotheby’s in New York on May 14.

Steve Wynn was strong to the finish and laid out the spinach, snapping the sculpture of Popeye for $28 million.

The billionaire casino tycoon and art collector won the spirited bidding Wednesday night at Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening Auction. The piece was one of three made by Koons, a master of over-sized, shiny sculptures of balloon dogs, toy trains and tulips.

According to Sotheby’s, Wynn plans to install Popeye and his can of spinach at his casino in Las Vegas.
